ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

The School of Architecture provides students who have a desire to learn the opportunity to partake in an immersive educational experience. The program itself fosters academic, professional, and personal growth. With this, the students enrolled in the school learn from licensed architects who have years of cumulative experience in the field. In order to continue to foster an immersive and challenging academic environment, the school gives its students access to open space studios. These studios serve as spaces where architecture students can thrive academically through collaboration and the congregation within the studio spaces.

Christine Thomas Memorial Architectural Study Abroad Scholarship

We are honoring one of our own extraordinary School of Architecture Graduates, Christine Thomas ('21) who regrettably was killed in a plane crash during the summer just months after her graduation. Those who interacted with her knew Christine as being a wonderful person with an incredibly inquisitive mind and an eagerness to pursue multiple paths toward knowledge and beauty. While a student here in our Graduate Architecture program, her work was always performed well beyond expectations, often seeking additional levels of inquiry and aesthetics. She was a talented designer and an extraordinary architect in the making.  She developed a strong network of friends and colleagues while in our program.  Working with architects, she was also finishing her exams toward professional licensure. Significant to this scholarship, Christine had worked extremely hard in 2020 to help plan and form an architectural study abroad cohort to Florence, which had been abruptly cancelled due to the pandemic. She loved travel and adventure as one of the best forms of learning about the world. With this, we lost much too early one of our most promising and talented graduates in architecture. It was an honor and privilege to have been in her association. Time to reflect and remember.

Directly from the heart and following her lead, we would like to honor her by setting up a dedicated scholarship in her name to support travel and study abroad experiences and to supply additional pathways for international studies in architecture.  As such, this scholarship aptly bears distinct qualities associated with her interests and passions:   The Christine Thomas Memorial Architectural Study Abroad Scholarship, dedicated to an SIUC Graduate Student in Architecture performing approved study abroad, travel, or field studies as part of their graduate studies in architecture.  Upon establishing this scholarship, we plan to also honor her later with a public event and gifting ceremony to bring as many fellow alumni together to share memories and to reflect together.

We appreciate your care, consideration, and warm support. Thank you all.
